GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Dec. 1, 2025) — Grand Prairie Mayor Pro Tem Junior Ezeonu announced today he will resign from his city council position to run for Texas House District 101, entering a Democratic primary race that will test his progressive platform across a majority-minority district covering portions of Arlington, Grand Prairie and Mansfield.

Ezeonu, who made history in 2021 by defeating a 12-year incumbent in a runoff election to become the youngest council member in the city’s 162-year history, has filed for the Democratic primary scheduled for March 3, 2026.

“I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the residents of Grand Prairie for the last four years,” Ezeonu said. “This was a very difficult but necessary decision. I look forward to continuing to fight for the residents of Arlington, Grand Prairie and Mansfield.”

During his tenure on the Grand Prairie City Council, Ezeonu compiled a record focused on economic relief and worker compensation. He successfully pushed to reduce property taxes twice, raised the city’s minimum wage for part-time employees, and increased pay for full-time city workers from $15 to $17.82 an hour. He also helped launch the VIA Grand Prairie rideshare program, which provides $3 rides for residents and visitors.

Ezeonu describes himself as a progressive leader with pragmatic local government experience — a perspective he plans to bring to the Texas House. His platform includes raising the state minimum wage to $15 an hour, expanding affordable homeownership opportunities, fully funding public schools, and repealing the private school voucher system.

“This contested primary will focus on experience and leadership,” said Ezeonu, who has built a following among younger voters through his podcast and has conducted candidate-training programs to prepare future local leaders.

“I stand by my record and with my community, and I am asking the residents of House District 101 to vote for me and continue our proud Democratic legacy in the Texas House with a new generation of leadership ready to work on day one,” Ezeonu said. “Now is our time, and our legacy to continue.”

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Nov. 3, 2025) — The Grand Prairie Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Sunday morning, Nov. 2, 2025, in the 2700 block of E IH-30 near MacArthur Boulevard.

Police said the collision happened at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday as a semi-truck was traveling westbound in slow-moving traffic. A Chevy Tahoe struck the rear of the semi, then collided with a Honda passenger car.

The Tahoe’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver was not injured, and the Honda’s driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Witnesses told investigators the Tahoe was traveling at a high rate of speed before impact and that the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office once next of kin are notified.

The crash remains under investigation.

Grand Prairie, Texas — A Dallas County judge has sentenced 22-year-old Kendral Pickett to three years of probation for a string of crimes that began with a high-speed chase in Grand Prairie and ended with an assault on a police officer at a Dallas hospital.

According to Grand Prairie police, the incident began in June 2025, when officers attempted to stop a Cadillac that had been reported stolen and was being driven erratically. The driver, later identified as Pickett, led officers on a pursuit before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into a wooded area.

A police K-9 tracked Pickett down, and officers took him into custody. He sustained minor injuries from the dog bite and was placed in the back of a Grand Prairie police Chevrolet Tahoe — a vehicle that did not have a safety partition separating the rear seat from the front.

While waiting for medics to treat his injuries, investigators say Pickett managed to maneuver his handcuffs to the front of his body, climb into the driver’s seat, and steal the police SUV.

Pickett then led officers on a second high-speed chase, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour through Dallas. The pursuit ended near Interstate 30 and Westmoreland Road, where police deployed spike strips that disabled the vehicle and caused it to crash down an embankment.

After the crash, Pickett was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. While there, police say he threw urine in the face of a Grand Prairie police officer, leading to an additional charge of assault on a public servant.

Pickett faced multiple charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, escape while arrested or confined, and assault on a public servant. Despite the seriousness of the crimes, a Dallas County judge this week sentenced Pickett to three years of probation instead of jail time.

The sentence has drawn criticism from some law enforcement supporters who say the punishment does not match the severity of the offenses, particularly the assault on an officer.

Grand Prairie police are investigating the death of a man under suspicious circumstances after his body was discovered at his home over the weekend.

Officers responded to the 500 block of Shawnee Trace at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 11, regarding a deceased male at his residence.

Detectives believe the man died under suspicious circumstances and are currently investigating to determine what exactly occurred. Police said they are not currently searching for any suspects or witnesses.

The investigation remains ongoing.

GRAND PRAIRIE, TEXAS (June 8, 2025) — A dangerous line of severe storms is expected to sweep through North Texas late this evening, with the greatest impact anticipated between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. across the DFW area. The National Weather Service has issued an advisory warning of damaging winds up to 80 mph, large hail, and the possibility of brief tornadoes and localized flash flooding.

🌀 Storm Threat Summary:

• Where: Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and surrounding counties

• When: Tonight, Sunday, June 8 through early Monday morning

• Main Hazards:

  • Damaging winds up to 80 mph

  • Hail up to 1.5 inches

  • Isolated tornadoes

  • Heavy rainfall and flash flooding

Residents are strongly urged to remain alert, bring loose items indoors, and have an emergency plan in place. Power outages are possible, and driving conditions may become dangerous overnight.

In anticipation of tonight’s storm threat, Governor Greg Abbott has activated multiple state emergency response resources. Agencies including the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), Texas DPS, Texas A&M Forest Service, and Texas Parks & Wildlife are on standby to respond to high-impact weather events statewide.

Governor Abbott’s statement emphasized preparedness:

“Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to support Texans as severe weather moves across our state. I urge everyone to remain weather-aware, monitor warnings, and take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.”

Emergency teams are staged across vulnerable areas and are prepared for:

• Urban search and rescue

• Swift water rescues

• Power restoration and utility coordination

• Medical response readiness

The Grand Prairie Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Friday afternoon, June 6, in the 800 block of South Belt Line Road.

According to police, at approximately 4:00 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a Harley Davidson motorcycle near Main Street and Belt Line Road. The motorcycle was not displaying a license plate. As the officer made contact with the rider, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed and temporarily evaded law enforcement.

Shortly after, the officer discovered the motorcycle had crashed near South Belt Line and Wheat Hill Drive. Investigators say the rider failed to navigate a curve and lost control. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen. Officers also recovered a quantity of suspected narcotics at the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin by the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Grand Prairie Police Department.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office recently ruled that Grand Prairie ISD must release both the termination notice and separation agreement for former superintendent Dr. Jorge Arredondo. WFAA was the first media outlet to report on these documents, featuring Dr. Arredondo’s statement that he never requested the separation agreement be withheld from the public — you can read their story here.

However, Dr. Arredondo’s attorney did submit a letter to the Texas Attorney General asking to keep the initial investigative report — the one detailing why he was placed on paid leave — private.

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX – The Grand Prairie Police Department is actively searching for a missing 5-year-old boy who disappeared from his home on Sunday evening.

Santiago Aburto Gonzalez was last seen at the Ashton Park Apartment Homes, located in the 2400 block of W. Pioneer Parkway. Authorities believe he walked out of his residence and has not been seen since.

Santiago was last wearing an orange shirt with "Mickey" printed on it, blue shorts, and no shoes. Police have classified him as an endangered missing child and are urging the public to help in the search.

Anyone with information on Santiago’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 immediately.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

The video, posted by Elizabeth Lopez in the Grand Prairie Texas Talk Facebook group, shows a young boy kneeling in prayer on the lawn outside the school, completely immersed in his faith. Moved by the sight, Lopez shared her thoughts with the community:

“I wish I knew the parents so I could ask for their permission first before posting, but since I don’t, I just want to say… I love to see our youth be so bold and without a care in the world, to get down and pray. 🙏🏾 Seeing this young man really touched my heart. I was picking up my son from school, and when I looked over, I saw him, and I was just blown away.”

Shortly after, another student joined him, bowing in prayer alongside him. Lopez described the moment as emotional, saying:

“It literally brought tears to my eyes. May God bless him and his family abundantly. To his parents, I wanted to say… you are being a great example to your child, and it shows. ❤️”

A Proud Mother’s Response

It wasn’t long before the boy’s mother, Stephanie Garcia, saw the video and commented:

“Hahaha, that’s my boy!!!!!!! That’s my baby! Thank you for noticing my beautiful boy! He’s truly a gift from God.”

She later shared more insight into her son’s unwavering faith during our phone call:

“Louis had a great day at school and was very thankful. He was feeling the Holy Spirit after school and just wanted to tell God that he was very thankful for the blessings he received that day. He also just wanted to repent. He spreads the gospel in class by telling students that Jesus Christ loves them and that He’s a very forgiving God.”

Louis, a 6th grader at Jackson Middle School, is no stranger to prayer. According to Lopez, her son has observed him praying over his lunch in the cafeteria on multiple occasions. His commitment to his faith is evident in his daily actions, showing that this was not a random moment but part of his routine devotion.

Viral Impact on the Community

Since the video was posted, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The original post in Grand Prairie Texas Talk, a private community Facebook group, has received over 2,000 reactions, with countless comments praising Louis’ boldness and faith. Many expressed admiration for his courage to pray in public, a testament to the values instilled by his mother, Stephanie Garcia.

For Lopez, this was more than just a passing moment—it was an inspiring sight that reminded her of the power of faith and the impact one young person can have.

“In a world where so many are afraid to show their faith, this young man reminded us all that being bold in prayer is something to celebrate,” she said.

Community Alert: Irving Police Request Public Assistance in Identifying Homicide Suspects

On February 23rd, around 5:00 a.m., Irving Police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 3800 block of Evergreen Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased male victim at the scene.

Investigators have released surveillance video footage showing three suspects and their vehicle involved in the incident. The Irving Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in identifying these individuals.

Three remarkable women from Grand Prairie — Regina Swindle, Patricia Harris, and Susan Laughlin — are set to sparkle once again at the 2025 College Football Playoff Semifinal during the 89th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday, Jan. 10, at AT&T Stadium. These alumnae of the prestigious Kilgore College Rangerettes dance team will reunite with hundreds of former members to celebrate the team’s legacy and perform in this iconic event.

As former Rangerettes, Swindle, Harris, and Laughlin were part of this long-standing Cotton Bowl tradition, donning the team’s signature red, white, and blue uniforms. This year, they join nearly 800 alumnae to mark the 85th anniversary of the world-renowned Rangerettes and the 75th consecutive appearance of the team at the Cotton Bowl Classic.

The festivities will include performances by the current Rangerettes, who will showcase their legendary high kicks, and alumnae from across generations who have learned a special routine. The performers range in age from their early 20s to an inspiring 93 years old — a dancer from the 11th line of the Rangerettes who participated in their inaugural Cotton Bowl appearance.

The alumnae represent a staggering 33 states and 275 cities, with some traveling from as far as Alaska and Hawaii. Among the returning dancers are mothers and daughters who both made the team decades apart, and even triplet sisters from the 2000s who plan to perform together once more.

The current Rangerettes have had an extraordinary year, recently performing in London's New Year's Day Parade and at Radio City Music Hall and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Founded in 1940 by Gussie Nell Davis, the Kilgore College Rangerettes are celebrated as the first collegiate dance and drill team in the world. The group has been led by only three directors in its illustrious history: Miss Davis, Deana Bolton Covin, and current director Dana Blair, who has served since 1993. Shelley Wayne and Angela Aulds round out the leadership as assistant directors and choreographers.

This Cotton Bowl Classic performance will celebrate not only the history of the Rangerettes but also the enduring spirit of women like Regina Swindle, Patricia Harris, and Susan Laughlin, who continue to inspire through their dedication to this time-honored tradition.

Grand Prairie, TX – Grand Prairie residents can now satisfy their late-night sweet cravings with the opening of Insomnia Cookies’ first location in the city. Known for serving warm, delicious cookies all day and deep into the night, the new bakery at 2810 S State Hwy 161 promises to become a hotspot for dessert enthusiasts.

This marks the brand’s 26th store in Texas and its 308th location nationwide, continuing Insomnia Cookies’ rapid expansion. Whether it’s a classic Chocolate Chunk cookie, a vegan-friendly option, or an indulgent brookie, the bakery offers something for everyone – including ice cream, brownies, and limited-edition menu items.

To celebrate the Grand Prairie store’s grand opening on Saturday, December 7, 2024, Insomnia Cookies is hosting an all-day event filled with sweet treats and giveaways. Customers who visit the store between 12:00 PM and 3:00 AM and sign up for Insomnia Rewards will receive a free Classic cookie – no purchase necessary. Additionally, from December 8 to December 22, customers can enjoy free delivery by using the code "GRANDPRAIRIE" when ordering.

Extended Hours for Sweet Cravings
The Grand Prairie store is ready to serve the community seven days a week with hours designed to cater to late-night cravings:

• Sunday-Wednesday: 12:00 PM – 1:00 AM

Elite Striping LLC, a proud member of the Grand Prairie community, recently hosted its 4th Annual Toy Drive at Chicken N Pickle. The event was a tremendous success, bringing together residents and local celebrities to support children in need.

The toy drive featured a star-studded lineup, including Vergil Ortiz Jr., Louie The Singer, and Dallas Cowboys players KaVontae Turpin and Rico Dowdle. These special guests hosted a meet-and-greet, exchanging photo opportunities for unwrapped toy donations. Thanks to the incredible turnout, over 600 toys were collected to brighten the holiday season for kids in Grand Prairie.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Leo Sameniego, one of Elite Striping's owners, shared, “Our pledge is to create successful relationships with our customers, employees, and community by building trust, treating every project with the utmost integrity, and exceeding expectations.
